In May 2021, we asked then-Representative Don Young why so few members in Congress have facial hair, and whether this was expected to change in the future.

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - In May 2021, then-congressman Don Young visited KTVF/KFXF Fairbanks to discuss issues facing Alaska and the nation.

For the final question, we asked Young why so few members in Congress have facial hair, and whether this was expected to change in the future.“When I first got elected nobody had a beard. There was none. That was, you know, 50 years ago. You would think that they would, but they didn’t - and then I started growing a beard 35 years ago,” Young said, adding, “I’ve got my beard for 35 years. I’ve had it this long before.

Young went on to explain, “This is an awful thing to say because it sounds kind of egotistical. It makes you look more mature. Not old, mature. A little more wise, and I enjoy that.” “I’ll probably keep this until the day I die, and if it falls out then, that’s different, but otherwise, I’m going to keep it when they put me in the ground,” he said.
