Fitzgerald’s American Music Festival opened Friday, celebrating 40 years with a four-day event that continues through Monday. On the first day, the biggest cheers were for Lucinda Williams when she hit the Berwyn venue’s patio stage.

Audiences take in a performance by Lucinda Williams during the American Music Festival at Fitzgerald’s in Berwyn on Friday, June 30, 2023. Smiley Tillmon and his trio entertained the listening room of the Sidebar with a sweeter take on Chicago blues. At 83 years young, Tillmon remains a warm and fun-loving performer. “I like to have fun on stage, but I don’t like fooling people,” he said. Lead guitarist Kate Moss played with a lot of restraint, which worked well in dialogue with Tillmon, but she also made her goldtop Les Paul wail and rip like a soul singer.
Euphoria erupted when Williams and her band took the Patio stage, opening with “Blessed,” and her unmistakable voice was heard over the streets and residential blocks of Berwyn. The loss of friends and fellow poets seemed to be on her mind as she introduced “Pineola,” and she launched into “Car Wheels on a Gravel Road” after letting the crowd know that the album was released exactly 25 years ago.
