'All he wanted to do was be a firefighter and work with his community and help people,' said the uncle of one of the firefighters killed.

Riding on the truck with him was Wayne Brooks Jr., 49, a veteran firefighter of more than 16 years who had trained Williams when he first took the job nine years ago.Brooks Jr., whose nickname was “Bear,” and Augusto “Augie” Acabou, 45, were killed after they were trapped in a blaze that broke out at about 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday aboard the Grande Costa D’avorio, a cargo ship carrying about more than a thousand vehicles.

“The knowledge that he had, the patience that he had ... was so comforting,” Williams said. “A lot of our last conversations were about God ... he was the big homie. That’s what I called him.”Despite the sunny day on Thursday, there were somber scenes across Newark, Union and other parts of New Jersey as service members and state and local officials mourned the loss of both firefighters. The families and fellow first responders of Acabou and Brooks Jr.

Police officers and other firefighters — some from a firefighters’ union office a block away — arrived at the porch of Acabou’s home in Newark every few minutes to offer their condolences and what help they could. Two local police vehicles idled nearby. Acabou’s brother told NJ Advance Media that the family was asking for privacy at this time as they grieve.
