Wind and a lack of functional fire hydrants hindered the fire fight at a Derry Township home on Monday night, but police say the fire had already spread throughout before first responders arrived.

Investigators have completed their investigation into a fire that tore through a Dauphin County home on Monday but said the cause of the fire is still undetermined.

Derry Township police said the Dauphin County Fire Investigation team found that the fire broke out in the enclosed roof of the home in the 200 block of Dunham Drive. While the cause is undetermined, investigators believe that after ignition, the fire spread undetected throughout the roof. Police said this is what caused the fire to grow as large as it did before firefighters arrived. It took only six minutes for the first units to get to the home, police said.he tried doing what he could to put out the fire before fire crews arrived, but the wind was making it difficult. The wind helped the fire spread to the home’s second detached garage.

After the tankers emptied the water into a large canvas “port-a-pond,” firefighters sucked the water into hoses and sprayed it onto the flames.Zahriah Balentine and Jenna Wise contributed to this report.
