STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- A Staten Island Ferry operating during the evening rush hour was evacuated in the New York Harbor after a fire broke out in the mechanical room aboard the boat Thursday, an FDNY spokesperson confirmed.
By 5:55 p.m. the ferry was anchored off the St. George Terminal dock -- in the New York Harbor -- and smaller boats were taking passengers from the ferry to the terminal, according to the spokesperson.“Known impacts from smoke are limited & the nature of the fire is under investigation.” “The boat was driving, everything was smooth, and then a loud beeping started happening,” said Ivan McCall, a passenger on the boat from the Silver Lake area. “We all knew something was wrong, and then the police started scrambling around.”Ivan McCall, shortly after his rescue from the Staten Island Ferry that caught fire during rush hour.
“The ferry crew and the police, they handled things very well,” McCall said. “They tried not to make anyone panic.” Family members of ferry passengers had gathered at the St. George terminal by 6 p.m., and were waiting with a large emergency response for the smaller boats to come in, carrying family who were passengers being evacuated.
