In our hands-on with finalfantasyxvi's combat, it's clear the game is rethinking the franchise's place in JRPG action. Is it enough, and is it compelling? Early signs are looking VERY encouraging. Our preview: FinalFantasyXVI FF16

Quick Links If Final Fantasy 15's battle system was the proof of concept for an action-RPG with turn-based influences, then Final Fantasy 16 combat is the prototype. While the fingerprints of FF15 are still present in the bombastic, fluid movements of the game's characters, FF16 feels like a more fully realized implementation of the theory behind its predecessor.

Common Enemy Combat Breakdown The bread and butter of Final Fantasy 16 will be the way Clive navigates through the world and engages in combat with enemy mobs, who, at least in the media preview, have distinct attack patterns and behaviors. Clive has the ability to hack-and-slash with the best of them, but the most intriguing part of FF16 combat is the use of Eikons. Clive is able to channel multiple different Eikons by equipping them, and he can swap between them mid-combat.

Final Fantasy 16 combat appears to have two distinct approaches to Eikons. First is Clive vs. Eikon, where he will use his powers to stave off the powerful beings without transforming into one of them himself. These battles feel like they're balanced on a knife's edge, creating a tension between Clive's humane journey to discover the meaning of the world he lives in and the sheer, almost unbelievable power that some people are allowed to wield within that same environment.

Fantasy Baseball: Trade for these struggling stars because they can't be this badFantasy Baseball: Trade for these struggling stars because they can't be this badIn this space, I often use advanced stats to urge fantasy managers to acquire or trade away players who have been especially fortunate or unfortunate in recent weeks. But there are times where, even though the numbers add up, the storyline does not. Players are human, and for a variety of reasons, good players sometimes don't play well for extended stretches.
