Fentanyl, other drugs blamed in Vista jail cell death, officials say [Breaking]
A 53-year-old man found unresponsive in a Vista jail cell earlier this year had a combination of fentanyl and prescription drugs in his system, sheriff’s officials said Monday.
Eddie Faulker’s autopsy found that he died from acute intoxication from fentanyl, trazodone, which an antidepressant, and gabapentin, a medicine used to treat nerve pain or seizures, homicide Lt. Joseph Jarjura said in a press release. The Homicide Unit investigates all in-custody deaths.Heart diseases were a contributing factor, Jarjura said of the autopsy finding. Faulkner’s death was determined to be an accident.
He was first booked into jail Nov. 7 on suspicion of failing to register as a sex offender and of violating the terms of his probation, officials said. Faulkner was alone in his cell when he was found unresponsive on the evening of April 17, according to the Sheriff’s Department, which manages the county’s jails. Deputies and medical staff responded immediately and performed life-saving measures, but Faulkner died before he could be taken to a hospital.Last year, a record 19 people died in San Diego County jail custody, and a 20th person who had been long hospitalized died shortly after he was released from county custody for medical reasons.
