Federal accident investigators are recommending that Alaska air tours implement tighter rules to improve safety regulations. Seven sightseeing planes have crashed in Alaska since 2007.
The NTSB wants the FAA to adopt"special federal aviation regulations" for Ketchikan similar to requirements in Hawaii and the Grand Canyon.In the most recent crash, in August 2021, photos taken by passengers showed that the pilot — flying by visual cues instead of instrument readings used in poor visibility — flew below clouds until crashing into a forested mountain, according to the safety board.
