Artifacts were stolen from 16 museums and historical societies between 1968 and 1979.
The investigation involved the FBI, United States Attorney’s Office, Upper Merion Township Police, and curators and researchers.
Authorities concluded Michael Corbett said took dozens of artifacts from museums along the East Coast. Last August, Corbett pleaded guilty to possession of stolen items, primarily antique firearms. In December, he was sentenced as part of a plea agreement to one day in prison, plus three years probation and a $65,000 fine, according to court records.
The Hershey Story said its returned pistol’s frame has the inscription “Lieutenant C.A. Schaeffer, Colonel Baker’s California Regiment.” Baker, a senator from Oregon and close personal friends with President Abraham Lincoln, was asked to form a regiment representing California for the Union Army in the early days of the Civil War. He recruited young men from Philadelphia and New York City including Christian A.
