The county is doubling payment to $2,000 an acre and expanding options for an established but stalled Living Snow Fence Program using corn or other materials to block blowing and drifting snow.
Farmers keep the barriers up from Dec. 1 to March 1 and then can remove them or harvest the corn. Living snow fences reduce late-night calls for plow drivers, reduces cost and makes for safer travel, supporters say. "We thought it was a really good thing, but there's been some communications hiccups -- it's too late by the time everybody knows," he said.
