Massachusetts has struggled since becoming an FBS school in 2012. If anything, that’s a huge understatement, as the Minutemen have put up a 21-103 record during their time in college football’s highest division.
The situation has gotten even worse in recent years. UMass has gone 3-37 over the last four seasons, and have frequently been listed as the worst team in the FBS ranks during that time. The Minutemen have a little hope that their offense could improve in 2023, however. Quarterback Taisun Phommachanh will be starting behind center for UMass after formerly sitting on the bench at both Clemson and Georgia Tech. While Phommachanh never lived up to his potential coming out of high school, he has shown some ability to both throw the ball and run in limited opportunities, and likely represents a big step up in talent for the Minutemen.
For the Aggies, this will be a season of transition, despite the fact that they bring back most of their offensive starters. Formerly an independent program like UMass, New Mexico State will now be competing in Conference USA. The Aggies will be attempting to repeat the magic of last season, where they finished 7-6 after a win in the Quick Lane Bowl after preseason predictions listed them among the weakest teams in the FBS.
Whether it’s respect for the UMass offense or doubts that New Mexico State can live up to its record from a year ago, sportsbooks are predicting a relatively close game on Saturday. FanDuel lists the Aggies as a seven-point favorite, with New Mexico State at -280 on the moneyline.for UMass vs. New Mexico State.
