At a celebration of life this week, Alaska bush pilot Jim Tweto was remembered not for his celebrity but as a generous and humble man fueled by his dedication to aviation and the communities he served.
Ferno Tweto, at center, greets people as they gather at the Alaska Aviation Museum at the start of a memorial for Jim Tweto on June 20, 2023.
Five planes flew over a crowd of more than 300 gathered at the edge of the Lake Hood Seaplane Base before the group packed into the museum to share stories of a hard-working pilot who sometimes waved off payment for emergency travels such as funeral services. When they landed, Tweto told Bekoalok he was a good man for trying to help his friend. The flight was free.
His wife, Ferno Tweto, personally greeted attendees before a brief service Tuesday evening. Even after working a long day, she said, her husband always had time to bring his daughters out to a picnic or spend time with them.Tweto considered the pilots who worked for him to be family and opened up his home to many of them who worked in Unalakleet, Ferno Tweto said.
Tweto continued flying after his retirement and worked for Golden Eagle Outfitters, which was owned by a friend, according to an obituary prepared by his family and distributed at the service.Photos of Jim Tweto are shown during a slideshow at the Alaska Aviation Museum during the Tuesday memorial.
