Urban warfare expert and retired U.S. Army officer John Spencer analyzes Extraction’s oner action scene, awarding a very low accuracy score.
Extraction's close-quarters building fight sequence is broken down by an urban-warfare expert, and he doesn't award a high realism grade. Directed by Sam Hargrave, Extraction stars Chris Hemsworth as mercenary Tyler Rake, who is tasked with rescuing a young boy named Ovi out of a dangerous, warlord-controlled section of Dhaka.
“Chris Hemsworth is more like Jason Bourne there with his hand-to-hand. Close-quarters fighting is very common in urban warfare. We actually tie the weapons to ourselves, so if we’re caught in that situation and turn a corner or somebody grabs our weapon they can’t take it away from us. “I can’t say I’ve found myself in a similar situation [to Ovi running away, knocking items over into his pursuers] or would teach that, but it could work. Absolutely slow the person down, buy yourself some time. I’d say you want to turn corners as much as possible and especially in a building like that just to confuse them on which way you went.
Does Extraction's Lack Of Realism Matter? Unless a film is specifically attempting to recreate real events, an adherence to reality is ultimately less important than an adherence to the imagined reality that the film creates. Achieving this verisimilitude allows audiences to suspend their disbelief, remaining engrossed and attuned to the film even if, in the back of their mind, they know what they're watching isn't real.
