The average rent in B.C. increased 30% from 2016 to 2021: “The rental crisis is worse here than pretty much anywhere else in the country.”
Another nearly 150,000 renter households put more than 30 per cent of their gross income towards rent and utilities, a level Statistics Canada calls unaffordable.
“It means people are cutting back on other basic necessities because rent is always the first thing to be paid,” Atkey said. “It means you’re making cuts everywhere else. So that’s extracurriculars for kids or people cutting back on food.”The rising cost of renting comes with a significant increase in the number of renters across the country, driven by growing populations and increasingly out-of-reach home prices.
“That’s because people are being priced out of home ownership and staying in rental longer, and now rental is not affordable either,” Atkey said.
