Lexi Reese, a former Google and Facebook employee, became the latest candidate to enter the high-profile Democratic Senate primary race to replace SenFeinstein, who is retiring from the upper chamber.
Lexi Reese announced her 2024 senatorial campaign on Thursday morning via video, where she declared the"California dream is dying.""It is time to build a better future together so we can thrive together. I'm Lexi Reese, and I'm running for the United States Senate to fix California's economy," Reese said in her video announcement.
Earlier this month, Reese filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission to run for the Senate seat. But Reese, a political novice, faces a tough battle in a race that already features three well-known members of Congress: Reps. Katie Porter , Adam Schiff , and Barbara Lee . Although this is a safe Democratic seat, the primary race is expected to raise millions of dollars as the battle to replace Feinstein barrels forth. Earlier this year, Feinstein faced public calls from members of her own party to resign from office due to her medical and health problems. But she has so far resisted calls to step down.
While the three members of Congress have name recognition, progressive bona fides, and significant fundraising, Reese comes up short. She will have to quickly make inroads with California's 22 million voters. And it will be hard to defeat opponents like Schiff who had $25 million on hand during last quarter's FEC records, while Porter had $9.5 million and Lee had $1.2 million. All three candidates have endorsements from major Democratic lawmakers.
She also championed her efforts to help women and minority-owned businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic."In the Senate, I will continue to work. But we are going to have to work together," said Reese."Because that's what the California dream is supposed to be about."
