He was a member of the 1990 team.

“The Mississippi State family mourns the loss of all-time Bulldog great Johnie Cooks,” MSU said in a news release. “Cooks was an SEC football legend and among the greatest to ever represent the Maroon and White. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.”

Cooks lettered all four years at MSU from 1977-81. The three-time All-SEC linebacker ended his illustrious career fourth in school history in sacks and fifth in total tackles . He was the Bulldogs’ leading tackler during the 1978 and 1981 seasons, racking up 100-plus stops each year. During his junior year, he recorded a career high 24 tackles in a game against Auburn.
