Just in time for the holidays, the ‘bows are coming to a community or neighborhood fishing hole near you. The Christmasy-looking fish have already landed in...
With the winter comes the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s annual rainbow trout stocking program.
The fish prefer water temperatures of 55 degrees to 60 degrees, but can tolerate temperatures around 70 before stress sets in. Extended periods near 75 degrees are lethal. The fish are transferred to indoor raceways and subsequently stocked in dozens of public lakes, rivers, city/county ponds and select tailraces around the state. Many are located in major urban areas around Dallas-Fort Worth, Austin, San Antonio and Houston.
Stocking quantities vary with demand. The program’s most popular release sites are the Guadalupe River below the Canyon Lake dam and the Brazos River below the Possum Kingdom dam. There are dozens of other stocking locations on the list ranging from select state park lakes to locally managed city and county park ponds, some of which are part of TPWD’s Neighborhood Fishing Program.
