For those of us with allergies, it's important to understand the stages.
. People who know they are at risk for anaphylaxis should always carry the medication, which is delivered using a prefilled self-injecting syringe and needle.
“The most important thing is to administer epinephrine ASAP,” Dr. Pongdee says. “Do not delay using epinephrine.” Typically, symptoms improve within 15 minutes of the injection, according to the Cleveland Clinic. Call 911 immediately if epinephrine isn’t available. Additional treatments may be necessary, depending on the situation. For example, supplemental oxygen and fluids may be given to help improve breathing problems, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Again, it’s important to get urgent care for a proper evaluation after an anaphylactic reaction—even if you can give yourself a shot of epinephrine, the Cleveland Clinic advises. There's a misconception that emergency care is needed because epinephrine is dangerous, which is untrue. Epinephrine is the only drug that can save lives during an anaphylactic event, so it’s used to give a person time until they can get medical help.
Identifying your allergy triggers is an important first step, but doing so isn’t always an easy process. “In some circumstances, the trigger is elusive and unknown and is referred to as ‘idiopathic.’ In that scenario, an allergist would use their skills to solve the mystery via good old-fashioned detective work,” Dr. Bassett says. Allergy tests are a helpful tool that can solve the mystery, and an immunologist will recommend the best options based on your suspected triggers.
