It’s an issue that could soon have the attention of Congress, as U.S. Rep. Sylvia Garcia, a Houston Democrat, pushes legislation to establish mandatory paid work breaks on construction sites.WASHINGTON — Marisol Cruz had spent the day on the roof of a Sugar Land school, baking in the blistering June sun as her crew rushed to get the building’s air conditioning back up and running.

That kind of heat exhaustion is common for construction workers in Texas, nearly 40 percent of whom say they are not given regular breaks on job sites, even in the heat of the summer, according to surveys by the Workers Defense Project.The results can be deadly. At least 384 workers — 53 of them in Texas — have died from heat exposure in the U.S. in the last decade,It’s an issue that could soon have the attention of Congress, as U.S. Rep.

Some cities have stepped in and established local ordinances requiring breaks. Austin and Dallas both mandate periodic rest breaks for workers.as some city council members have pushed to establish a similar ordinance. The labor union is lobbying for it, as well.
