Euphoria Film Editor Julio C. Perez IV, ACE On Matching The “High-Highs And Low-Lows” Of The Adolescent Mind – Production Value
At the beginning of his career, Julio C. Perez IV wasn’t sure what part of filmmaking he wanted to pursue, until he found his place in editing. “I love almost every facet of making a film, but with editing I was fully absorbed,” he says. “I felt the beautiful connection to image, sound and rhythm that I didn’t in any other facet of filmmaking.
“[Levinson] wanted the show itself to reflect the dynamics of an adolescent mind,” says Perez. “My experience as an adolescent is the high-highs and low-lows. Everything is a tragedy or a triumph.” To match the dramatic nature of a teenager’s mind, he decided to go with a more “percussive” style of editing, to punctuate the “dramatic tragedies and triumphs of that world view.”
Since the series deals with drug addiction, selectively deviating from that percussive style lent itself to what he calls an almost narcotic quality. “There’s a feeling that people gravitate to,” he says, “of the worry dissipating and all you see is this beauty in the world. Editorially we wanted to mimic that quality in certain passages and then, of course, have the opposite effect in other ones where you’re being more restrained and patient in the sense of bleakness and devastation.
The final two episodes of the season follow Lexi’s play, which Perez says was “fun and terrifying” to edit. “What I love about that episode is that it’s diving into Lexi’s deep subjectivity.” While there have been glimpses into Lexi’s past where the viewer can see how she has been hurt by Rue or other characters, this is the first time Lexi’s view of the story is told to everyone.
