Mr. Schmitt’s victory in the Republican-leaning state, projected by the Associated Press, leaves his party in a strong position in the race to replace GOP Sen. Roy Blunt, who is retiring, and to help the GOP effort to build a majority in what is now a 50-50 Senate.
