We live in a multilingual society, and in Texas, especially, we are lucky to have two languages spoken and written around us all of the time. The fact that some people are still offended to hear Spanish spoken around them is almost shocking because it is so common. The right choice for the boss, Tax Assessor-Collector Jennifer Carey, was obviously to work on improving the negative office environment. Instead, Carey demanded bilingual employees sign an “English-Only rule,” Cajamarca said.Erath County Judge Brandon J. Huckabee was right to condemn the policy. Carey’s poor judgment and apparent failure to manage workplace hostility call into question her ability to do the job.
