The eero Pro 6E mesh network system, shown here as a $399 two-pack, uses multiple routers to nuke Wi-Fi dead spots in your home.Houston-area houses can be big. And if you’ve got one of these swankiendas, you’re blessed. But you may also feel cursed by their WiFi dead spots.
Mesh routers work very well and they're easy to set up, but they also cost more than most standalone routers — sometimes a lot more.I’ve been reviewing a state-of-the-art mesh system from eero, one of the early pioneers of the technology that is owned by Amazon. The eero Pro 6E takes gigabit-plus speeds from internet providers and blankets your home via the equally zippy WiFi 6E protocol.
Which is a roundabout way of saying that the eero Pro 6E is a really fast mesh system, so long as you have the gear to work with that “E” part. It also has one of the friendliest setup routines I’ve seen, despite a minor glitch in the process. More on that in a minute. I ran into one small hiccup. Before the WiFi is switched on from each mesh router, your phone must make a Bluetooth connection to it. With both routers, the initial connection failed; I had to try a second time, and then I was able to complete the setup.
The second router can be placed wherever you need additional coverage, so long as it can communicate with the first one. One thing you cannot control: which devices connect to which radio band. The eero Pro 6E uses only one network name, or SSID, and the router matches device with frequency. On routers with this approach, you’re usually allowed to override the automation and make the assignments yourself, but not with eero’s hardware.
