The Democratic group emilyslist endorsed Democratic New York SenGillibrand for reelection in 2024, giving her a key boost as whispers spread she may face a primary challenge in 2024.
The group offered its endorsement to Gillibrand on Wednesday morning, citing her history of voting in favor of abortion rights over the last six years. EMILY’s List made similar endorsements for lawmakers such as Sen. Elizabeth Warren , signaling that abortion rights will be a key subject during the 2024 cycle.“Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand has always been a pro-choice champion for the people of New York and for all Americans,” EMILY's List President Laphonza Butler said in a statement.
The endorsement comes early in the 2024 cycle, but it provides Gillibrand with a key endorsement as she seeks to fend off primary challenges. One such challenge could come from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez , who passed on challenging Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer last year but kept the door open on whether she’d battle Gillibrand for the nomination.“Don’t ask me that question,” she told Politico with a laugh. “There’s a world where I’m here for a long time in this seat, in this position.
Gillibrand announced her reelection bid for a third term in the Senate in late January. The incumbent senator is considered a favorite in the race and is expected to win easily in the heavily blue seat if she doesn’t face a serious primary challenge.
