DeadRingers star Emily Meade breaks down her role as Susan in the new PrimeVideo series, her thoughts on Rachel Weisz playing identical twins, and the effect of intimacy coordinators on set:
Emily Meade stars in Dead Ringers and faces off with twin sisters who are gynecologists played by Rachel Weisz. Dead Ringers is a remake of the 1988 film of the same name directed by David Cronenberg, and the Prime Video miniseries stars Weisz in the dual roles of Elliot and Beverly Mantle.
I binged the whole season. And my jaw dropped many, many times. It's really extraordinary work by everybody. Although I don't think I ever want to go to a dinner party at the Parkers'. And the entire time I was so nervous because I was like, "Okay, obviously, my love of Spinal Tap is not quite very unique." And I'm sure he gets that all the time. So I'm not going to be like, "Wow, Spinal Tap! or lt goes to 11," or something like that. But there was finally one moment where he talked about something about a drummer in a band, I don't know what he said, but I snuck in there like, "Oh, he spontaneously combusted.
I think she's a person who's clearly very arrested in development and has a lot of trauma and a very bizarre way of relating to the world. And I think she believes that she really, really just loves babies and women and wants to help. But I think she's also desperate for love and attention and money and all of that. And so I think she has a lot of duality to her.
Emily Meade: Definitely, Susan's favorite is Beverly. I think that I played her sort of like Susan was a bit in love with Beverly. Ultimately, she's super enamored and just idolizes her and is sort of just in love with her. Wants her to be her mom, wants her to be her wife, wants her to love her. I think Susan doesn't really understand Elliot and sort of just sees her as something pulling Beverly away. But yeah, I think by far, Susan is super obsessed with Beverly.
Watching the show, it took me about five minutes to completely forget that Rachel is just one person. It was so seamless, the way they show two of her. Can you talk about what that was like on set? You mentioned that you had to do the dinner scenes over and over again. How did they film it to make two of her and have it be so perfect?
Those are some of the elements mixed together. But yeah, watching Rachel go back and forth was not only, talent-wise, and performance-wise, incredible, but the amount of work and commitment, [and] even just the sheer volume of lines she has to remember and go back between, and the energy required. An actress at her level and experience doesn't have to work that hard. Like, she could never do something that hard again, and she would still forever be a beloved actress.
