Eliminating vehicle safety inspections spells catastrophe (Opinion)
," : There is a bill on the desk of Gov. Abbott at this time to eliminate the safety portion of annual inspections. This is a very bad idea. As the manager of a repair facility that performs these, I can attest to the fact that we fail multiple vehicles each week for tires with cords or even steel showing, usually on the inside edge of the tires where it is hard to see. These tires are at extreme risk of blowing out on the highway, which can result in catastrophic consequences.
If Abbott signs this bill, you will still pay the $7.50 safety fee, but it will be added to your annual registration. Many people say that other states do not have safety inspections. True, but Texas has two-lane roads with speed limits up to 75 mph. On I-35 people regularly drive at speeds of 75 or 80. On the tollway, people regularly run 90 to 100 mph. Do you want to be next to the person who has cord showing through their treads? I sure don't.
Lastly, if the state takes away the $7.00 fee from the inspection stations, and it drops down to just the federally required emission test at $18.50, then independent stations will cease to perform them as it will not be economically viable, and the only place to get them will be dealerships. They will be overwhelmed, and it may take up to a week to get an inspection after dropping your vehicle off.
