Champion takes and early lead, then hangs on for his second Monster Energy Supercross win in as many 2023 starts
Reigning series champion Eli Tomac took the lead a fifth of the way through the main event Saturday night at Snapdragon Stadium and raced to his second Monster Energy Supercross in as many 2023 starts.Second behind the Yamaha rider for the second straight week was two-time series champion Cooper Webb on a KTM. Justin Barcia was third on a GasGas followed by Ken Roczen and defending San Diego winner Chase Sexton .
Justin Lawrence led wire-to-wire to score his second straight win to start the season aboard a Honda in the 250cc support class. Colt Nichols took the lead coming out of the gate in the 450cc feature with Webb and Tomac giving chase. Webb moved into the lead just 2 ½ laps into the 22-minute feature. Two laps later, Tomac moved past Webb.
Webb challenged Tomac over the final two laps with the winner holding a 1 ½-second margin at the finish of the 40
