Despite dangerously high temperatures in the forecast, neither CPS nor ERCOT had issued conservation requests as of Tuesday morning.
“All our plants are running,” he said. “We’re good to go. We’ve done all the work that we needed to do to be prepared.”
The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory Tuesday for San Antonio and the surrounding region. It says the heat index — or the feels-like temperature — will soar into the 107- to 114-degree range Tuesday afternoon for the southern Rio Grande Plains, I-35 corridor and Coastal Plains. A year ago, ERCOT underestimated the level of demand Texans would put on the grid, and demand set records nearly a dozen times, finally pushing 80,000 megawatts for the first time ever in July. But even with more all-time high demands expected, ERCOT is projecting having excess power in the few-thousand megawatt range or more.
“With high demand forecasted, we will continue to use all operational tools available, including implementation of new programs,” ERCOT President and CEO Pablo Vegas said in a statement. “ERCOT will also execute previous sessions’ legislative reforms, such as our weatherization inspections, and we’ll continue our reliability-first approach to operations, always prioritizing grid reliability.”
