The El Campo star and No. 1 running back recruit in the country verbally committed to Louisville Monday evening,Owens held offers from a long line of the nation’s top college football programs, including Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, USC, Texas A&M and others.
“I have always been a trailblazer, and aimed to create my own legacy on the road less traveled in hopes of inspiring others to believe in themselves,” Owens said in his message posted to Twitter. “It was the driving force in me making this life changing decision on where to spend the next 3-4 years of my life.”
Owens, a former University of Texas commit, posted later in the evening that he would not be taking anymore college visits unless it was to Louisville. Owens is the top running back and No. 16 overall player in the nation, according to the composite rankings from 247Sports. He is the third-ranked player in Texas behind Paetow defensive lineman David Hicks and Denton Ryan linebacker Anthony Hill.
Owens was named the MaxPreps National Junior of the Year after rushing for 2,989 yards and 46 touchdowns while leading the Ricebirds on a trip to the third round of the UIL Class 4A playoffs last fall. He finished the campaign with more than 3,300 total yards and 49 scores.
