City agrees not to issue fines while lodging owners agree to pause accepting new people
Officials from the city of El Cajon have scheduled a Friday meeting with local hotel operators and have delayed issuing fines they had threatened to impose on the establishments for allegedly illegally operating homeless shelters.
Wells said the discovery was made after investigating why police and paramedic calls to the hotels had increased in recent weeks. The threats of fines sparked a dispute with county Board of Supervisors Chair Nathan Fletcher, who called the mayor “a fraud” and said his actions could result in homeless people being kicked onto the street. His office also said 64 percent of people using county vouchers in El Cajon hotels were from El Cajon, and more than 90 percent were from East County.
“The number of criminal drug dealers and fugitives using the county’s motel voucher program is disturbing,” Police Chief Mike Moulton said in the release, which was titled “San Diego County’s motel voucher program for homeless harboring criminals and fugitives in El Cajon.” Police also found a large amount of methamphetamine, drug scales and drug-packaging material in the room of another man who had a voucher and was arrested. The same man was arrested two more times while still in the voucher program, according to the release.
“Are we going to point fingers or work on solutions?” Anderson said. “That’s why I haven’t name-called, and I’ve offered solution after solution.”
