President Joe Biden and Gov. Greg Abbott coldly shake hands in El Paso. Yes, the visit was a photo op, but what has Abbott done that wasn’t for show?SAN ANTONIO — On Sunday, President Joe Biden touched down on the world’s largest football field when he arrived in El Paso for his first tour of the southern border.
Abbott did have a letter for Biden. Its opening line was the friendliest: “Your visit to our southern border with Mexico today is $20 billion too little and two years too late.” Absence can speak volumes. That it was Biden’s first visit of his presidency to the U.S.-Mexico border reflects his administration’s handling of border and immigration concerns — remote, disconnected, seemingly incoherent. But, at long last, he visited. And we would rather have Abbott and Biden shake hands than not.
Three days before his visit to Texas, Biden became the most recent president to offer proposals that straddle those tensions. He announced from the White House a new policy granting humanitarian “parole” to migrants from Nicaragua, Cuba, Haiti and Venezuela. Under the program, the United States will accept 30,000 eligible migrants a month from those four countries while being harder on those who don’t use its legal pathways.
In preparing for the eventual end of Title 42, a policy we oppose, DHS is increasing the use of expedited removal, under Title 8, for noncitizens not claiming a fear of persecution or torture, or determined to not have credible fears after interviews with asylum officers.
