Smoke could be seen from miles away from the fire on Grand Concourse and 181st Street in Fordham Heights. Flames broke out just before noon.
On Sunday evening, the FDNY was still attacking what was left of the fire but captured the moment a lithium-ion battery from an e-bike burst into flames.
The charred remains of a single e-bike is being kept as evidence, but the batteries can explode with no warning - into what Kavanaugh describes as a tremendous volume of fire. The bike and battery were in a back room in the supermarket, and even though firefighters were on the scene within four minutes of the call, the quick spread pushed the response to five alarms - requiring about 200 firefighters, five of whom are getting medical treatment, along with a member of FDNY EMS and a Con Ed worker.
Firefighers are expected to remain at the scene throughout the night to work on putting out the flames.
