From fayobserver: With a 71-44 season-opening win over Jacksonville, 35-year-old Jon Scheyer secured his first win as the Duke Blue Devils' head coach after replacing retired Hall of Famer Mike Krzyzewski at the end of last season.
Whitehead was ruled out earlier this week with Scheyer noting “he’s still a couple weeks away.” Lively, who is recovering from a calf injury, remains day-to-day.
The Blue Devils ended the first half with a 42-26 lead behind a 14-2 run led by 16 points from Jeremy Roach. The junior guard – Duke's only remaining contributor from last year's team – was 6 of 7 from the floor in the opening period including 4 of 5 from the 3-point line. Duke extended its lead to 25 points midway through the second half. Freshman forward Mark Mitchell led the Blue Devils with 18 points while Northwestern transfer Ryan Young scored all 12 of his points in the second half.
Duke will be back in action on Friday at 6:30 p.m. back at Cameron Indoor against USC Upstate before traveling to Indianapolis next week to face No. 5 Kansas at the Champions Classic on Nov. 15. The defending NCAA national champion Jayhawks will be without head coach Bill Self against the Blue Devils after Self and assistant Kurtis Townsend were suspended four games for their part in recruiting infractions stemming from the 2017 FBI investigation into college basketball corruption.
