PITTSBURG — A Fremont man who died in a wrong-way collision on a Contra Costa County highway that the California Highway Patrol suspects was caused by driving under the influence has been identified.
James Kuang, 50, was driving east on Highway 4 on Tuesday near the Railroad Avenue exit when a Dodge Durango going west in the eastbound lanes slammed into his Honda, the CHP said. He died at the scene.CHP spokesman Ofcr. Adam Lane said Friday that the 53-year-old Richmond resident who drove the wrong way was arrested on suspicion of murder; driving the wrong way resulting in injury or death; and driving with a suspended license.
A spokesman for the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office said there was no additional information Friday about the man’s case. The crash hospitalized the suspect, and the CHP said the injuries weren’t life-threatening. Pittsburg police officers arrested the man after he left the crash scene.
A passenger in the Honda suffered major injuries in the crash, which also involved a Toyota Highlander and a three-axle tanker truck. A driver and infant in the Toyota were checked out at a hospital. The driver of the tanker was uninjured.
