New: Texas drivers license scam targeting Asians includes 6-figure ripoffs and arrest, DPS says
Department officials have now combed through more than 1.5 million driver’s license transactions from last year and are still piecing together who’s behind the sweeping scam — and how they pulled it off.Authorities allege more than 1,200 duplicate driver’s licenses were illegally ordered using information exposed in a data breach, although the exact source is unknown, according to an arrest affidavit filed in Travis County on March 13.
Li had used them to buy luxury vehicles in Colorado and Utah, including a Mercedes valued at more than $123,000 and a 2023 Porsche Cayenne, the affidavit said. The affidavit gives little information about Li’s background or how he allegedly became involved in the scheme, which is characterized as “a sophisticated operation by an organized crime group.”
