The lawmaker behind the bill, which is a signature away from law, defended it, saying it eliminates Texans from being upsold by 'shady dealerships.'

State Rep. Cody Harris, R-Palestine, insists Texans will be able to keep themselves safe on the roads despite eliminating vehicle safety inspections. It would go into effect on Sept. 1 if the bill is signed by Gov. Greg Abbott.

"Absolutely," Yu said. "People would be driving down the road with window tint darker than it should be. Tires might not be properly inflated. A lot of items like exhaust would be too loud.""These inspections are a waste of time for Texas citizens and a money-making Ponzi scheme used by some shady dealerships to upsell consumers with unnecessary repairs," Harris wrote.

Texas is one of just 13 states still requiring annual safety inspections, according to reporting from our partners at the Houston Chronicle. Harris, Brazoria, Fort Bend, Galveston, and Montgomery counties all require emissions testing within the ABC13 viewing area.
