Dozens of residents decry placement of sexually violent predator in Jacumba Hot Springs [Breaking]
Dozens of Jacumba Hot Springs residents pleaded with a judge on Friday to reject placing a 71-year-old man classified as a sexually violent predator in their small, desert community.
More than 25 Jacumba Hot Springs residents attended the hearing to voice their concerns in person. Some said they worried that Stafford would re-offend. Others said they were concerned that, because of the rural location, it would take sheriff’s deputies too long to arrive should Stafford commit a crime.
Ernesto Soto said he worried adding another sexually violent predator to the community would affect home values. Alan Stillman, executive director of Liberty Healthcare Corporation, said during the hearing that no sexually violent predator who has been under their supervision in the last 19 years has ever reoffended. Stillman also said Liberty looks across the county for suitable rentals — sometimes making inquiries at hundreds of properties — before finding a landlord who will agree to house a sexually violent predator.
Most offenders who fit the criteria — including Stafford — are housed at Coalinga State Hospital in Fresno County, where they can take part in a program that aims to teach them how to curb their criminal urges and allows them to be released under heavy supervision in the community.
