Domestic calls are more unpredictable and deadly for officers: Here’s why
Thursday illustrates the danger that domestic violence calls can pose for law enforcement.
“While domestic violence calls may not be the most dangerous duty that officers face, it is inaccurate to say these calls are by any means safe,” Johnson wrote. “Four studies examined officer assaults at DV calls and revealed 46% of officers assaulted at DV calls received an injury requiring medical treatment.
When police respond to a domestic violence call, it is at a private residence as opposed to a public or outdoor space — meaning they have less information about the layout, according to Ritter. Additionally, homes are smaller and there is not enough room to move around and protect. Officers walking into domestic incidents do not know how the situation escalated, the abuser’s tactics and what factors, such as financial strain or drug and alcohol use, amplify the situation, Ritter said.
