Despite a first half from Mostert that saw him eclipse the century mark with 108 yards on 11 carries, Miami, as they often have, got away from the run as they made their way out of the locker room. And while the game looked like the Dolphins’ to lose up eight as the fourth quarter began, six carries for 28 yards in the entire second half raised questions again toward the inability of McDaniel to plant his flag in the ground and churn clock in the ground game.
While I understand it’s nice to have two Ferraris on the outside in what is the NFL’s most electric wideout tandem, your run game has to show some sort of reliability come playoff time. It’s really the common theme for offenses this time of year unless you’re afforded the luxury of a unicorn at quarterback—which no one will anoint Tagovailoa as.
Expanding a playbook, being unpredictable in what you want to do conceptually, and forcing bodies closer to the line of scrimmage to counter Mostert will only open up further opportunities on the outside—especially for a signal-caller that makes his money dissecting the intermediate areas of the offense , where he’s thrown six touchdowns compared to one interception.
If the Dolphins eye a wild-card spot come the turn of the new year, diversifying the offense and taking the onus off Tagovailoa’s shoulders will be paramount. Hill and Waddle remain the pillars of the unit, but this is December football in the AFC East and more attention to the ground game should remain in the cards to further inflate McDaniel’s playbook.
