revive the sex comedy? Probably not. Has it at least revolutionized the subgenre, bringing something heretofore unseen to the summer slate? Maybe, but only if you’re measuring it against the past decade or so of decidedly sexless seasonal tent poles. On the one hand, it is more or less the screwball raunch fest promised by the trailers; on the other, there’s a sentimental throughline that tempers its more audacious vulgarity.
She plays Maddie, a Montauk native who makes ends meet as a bartender and Uber driver during the beach town’s busy summer season. Meanwhile, she resents the 1 percent who have so gentrified the place that it’s almost impossible for a local to actually live there. So when her car gets repossessed, she’s at risk of losing her childhood home, where she lived with her mother until she died some years prior.
Whatever you might think happens from here probably does; in revealing its sentimentality early on, one can have a good guess at where it’s going. The script—cowritten by director Gene Stupnitsky and John Phillips —abounds in bawdy humor, though one might find themselves yearning for more of it. I couldn’t help dreading the saccharine divergences, fearing the comedy, for which in these dark days many of us are desperate, was soon at its end.
