Blumhouse's surprise horror hit M3GAN sees the titular A.I. doll rack up a pretty decent bodycount, but does that include Dewey the dog?
Does M3GAN commit the ultimate horror movie sin of killing a dog? Horror movie factory Blumhouse has produced its share of duds, but it also has a knack for finding projects with really great hooks. Past examples include Get Out, Insidious, The Purge and many more. M3GAN joined that ranking in 2022, with this sci-fi horror finding a young girl named Cady befriending the titular A.I. doll, whose obsession with Cady turns murderous in almost record time.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT M3GAN won over audiences with its expert mix of scares and campy, over-the-top humor, and on Rotten Tomatoes it only stands behind Get Out as Blumhouse's most critically acclaimed film. It also grossed close to $180 million worldwide, and a fittingly titled sequel called M3GAN 2.0 is set to arrive in 2025 with stars Allison Williams and Violet McGraw returning.
Was Gemma Responsible For Dewey's Death In M3GAN? M3GAN was designed by Cady's aunt Gemma , who clearly isn't on great terms with neighbor Celia even before the attack. Gemma's intense dislike for the dog - including saying Dewey's shock collar needed to be turned up and that he should be put down - seems to have pushed M3GAN to kill him.
Killing dogs in movies is considered something of a taboo for most audiences, though some - such as I Am Legend or John Wick - have used it as a powerful motivating incident. The prevalence of this trope has even led to the creation of a site called DoesTheDogDie.com, so canine lovers can prepare themselves if a given movie or TV show does indeed kill a dog character. At the very least, M3GAN has the good taste to keep Dewey the dog's demise offscreen; Celia herself isn't as fortunate.
