We speak with BostonStrangler director Matt Ruskin about Keira Knightley's casting and his decision to approach the true crime thriller from a reporter's perspective:

Differentiating itself from the 1968 film, Matt Ruskin approaches Boston Strangler from the perspective of a reporter, rather than a detective. Based on the murder of over a dozen women, real-life journalists Loretta McLaughlin and Jean Cole are the first to connect the crimes. The duo was never formally recognized for their work, despite the major role they played throughout the investigation. However, years after their passing, Loretta and Jean's story is finally being told.

I discovered that she broke the story and that she actually named the Boston Strangler during the course of her reporting. I tried to find out all that I could about Loretta and the other journalist who she worked with—Jean Cole. In trying to research them, I found out that Jean Cole's granddaughter is an old friend of mine, so I called her up. It was funny. I read Jean's obituary, and it mentioned that she had two daughters.

Boston Strangler is more about Loretta's story than the actual murderer themselves. What made you want to tell it from this perspective? What about Loretta’s friendship with Jean? What was your focus when you were writing about that dynamic and how it evolved over time?
