The National Weather Service issued a stern message on Tuesday, warning that travel in California's Sierra Nevada and the Tahoe area could be 'difficult to impossible' in the coming days.
The weather service advised drivers to expect heavy snow and whiteout conditions Wednesday night into Friday morning and then again Friday night into Sunday."Avoid traveling during these times!" the weather service said onThe warning comes as a cold front originating from Canada drops down into California, pulling in some moisture from the tropics.
Idamis Del Valle-Shoemaker, a forecaster with the weather service's Sacramento office, said she would describe the system as a weak atmospheric river."We're expecting dangerous travel conditions, travel delays, chain control and highway closures," she said. Across five days, snow totals in the Tahoe Basin are forecast to range from 1 to 3 feet, while Shasta County and the Southern Cascades could see 10 to 30 inches, according to the Sacramento office.snow amounts in the region could add up to 3 feet.
