The 'Con & On' series follows a cast of characters through 30 years of adventures at a fictional comics convention that looks a lot like San Diego
The convention that kicked off in San Diego in 1970 in the basement of the US Grant hotel, moved to the El Cortez Hotel then settled into the San Diego Convention Center has inspired the birth of multiple competitors and clones around the Unites States and the world.The comic culture-driven gatherings have, in essence, become a comic book character stirring the pot and plot.
Cornell, contacted at his home in England, long has been a regular San Diego Comic-Con attendee. Except for one year when “my gall bladder went bang,” he relates, resorting to comic book dialogue. “It’s a five-issue monthly series, with each issue leaping our characters ahead eight or so years,” explains Cornell via email from his home in England. It’s a dark comedy that follows the group of friends as they change and are shaped by events in their lives through the years.Ahoy Comics, a small but vibrant comic book publisher in Syracuse, N.Y., ran with it.
Seely calls Comic-Con a main character — “it’s the platform on which everyone is always bounding off each other.”
