Gov. RonDeSantis will make his first visit to the Texas border next week. It is his second trip to the border, adding to an Arizona visit earlier in June, which will surpass the number of visits that POTUS and VP have made in office.

The 2024 Republican presidential hopeful is slated to stop in Eagle Pass, Texas, an extremely remote 30,000-person town in south-central Texas that in 2021 and 2022 was the epicenter of the border crisis. It is his second trip to the border, adding to an Arizona visit earlier in June, which will surpass the number of visits that President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have made in office.

"Governor DeSantis is definitely running as the border security candidate in this campaign," Steinhauser wrote in an email."He has strongly asserted that he will deliver on many of the promises that former President Trump made, but did not deliver on. One clear example is finishing the border wall and striving toward true operational control of the border.

— Bryan Griffin June 20, 2023 Most recently, DeSantis deployed Florida personnel to Texas to help Texas National Guard and Department of Public Safety officers on the front lines. DeSantis's office said he will not visit the deployed state officers during his time in Eagle Pass. DeSantis has not disclosed who will accompany him on his tour. He'll speak at the Eagle Pass VFW Post on Monday morning.

“The Governor is unable to join as he is focused on delivering property tax relief for all Texans,” Abbott spokeswoman Renae Eze said in a statement. A good guide for the visit would be Rep. Chip Roy , a House Freedom Caucus member who has been outspoken about securing the border during his time in office, according to Macias. Roy, unlike other Republicans in Texas who have"talked a big game" but not delivered in fixing the border, is serious about seeing the federal government regain control of the 2,000-mile boundary. Roy endorsed DeSantis for president in March, months before the governor announced his White House run.

Gavin NewsomCalifornia Gov. Gavin Newsom says there’s no chance “on God’s green earth” he’s running for president in 2024. But Newsom wants to make clear Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who is running, is “weak” and “undisciplined” and “will be crushed by Donald Trump” in the Republican primary. Meanwhile, DeSantis likes to mock Newsom’s apparent “fixation” on Florida while insisting the Democratic governor’s “leftist government” is destroying California. The fierce rivalry features dueling governors who represent opposite ends of the ideological spectrum from two of the nation’s largest and most influential states. Newsom and DeSantis almost certainly won’t face each other on any ballot in 2024. But in many ways they are defining the debate this election season.
