The Florida governor, who was widely expected to formally enter the race after the conclusion of the Florida legislative session, is the sixth Republican candidate to wage a challenge to Trump, who announced his third run for the White House in November and has ramped up his attacks on DeSantis in recent months.
The filing will allow DeSantis to begin collecting contributions for his presidential campaign and comes ahead of a major fundraising event with donors in Miami on May 25.DeSantis enters the race as he trails former President Donald Trump by double digits in early polls and as GOP megadonors and party leaders have yet to coalesce behind a candidate, amid concerns about Trump’s legal woes and DeSantis’ electability.
