Democratic Texas AG hopeful Rochelle Garza outraises GOP incumbent Ken Paxton

Texas Attorney General challenger Rochelle Garza speaks to delegates and guests attending the Lady Bird Breakfast fundraiser at the 2022 Texas Democratic Convention at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in Dallas, July 16, 2022.AUSTIN — Democratic attorney general candidate Rochelle Garza raked in more campaign cash than GOP incumbent Ken Paxton in recent months, a sign of the race’s growing competitiveness.

Garza put out a triumphant statement on Monday, pointing to the fundraising disparity as proof that Paxton is “the weakest and most vulnerable AG in the country.”Yet, while Garza posted a bigger haul than Paxton, she has far less cash on hand to campaign with. Paxton is sitting on a $3.5 million war chest, compared to Garza’s $450,000.

A political newcomer, Garza will need to spend heavily to introduce herself to general election voters and explain why they should fire Paxton, said Rice University political scientist Mark Jones. In 2018, Democrat Justin Nelson spent more than $3 million in his run against Paxton and fell short by 4 percentage points.

“In the end, Paxton knows if people vote in this race based purely on partisanship, he wins,” Jones said. “The onus is on Garza and Democrats to raise enough money to educate Texas voters on why they shouldn’t vote for Ken Paxton, even if they’re voting for other Republicans.” Democrats have been locked out of statewide office in Texas for nearly three decades, but they see Paxton as a top target this November because of the Republican’s mounting legal problems.
