The comparatively poor finances of Whaley’s campaign make it even more difficult for her to upset DeWine, who has a significant lead in independent polls and is running as a well-known incumbent, writes Jeremy Pelzer.
Nan Whaley, the Democratic nominee for Ohio governor, has raised a total of about $6.5 million as of the end of August, according to her newly filed campaign-finance report. That's far less than what most candidates for Ohio governor have raised by this time in the campaign -- including Whaley's opponent, Republican Gov. Mike DeWine. This graph shows how much recent gubernatorial nominees raised between Jan. 1 of the year prior to the election and Sept.
Whaley, the former mayor of Dayton, has raised about $6.35 million for her campaign as of the end of August, according to aanalysis of data from the Ohio secretary of state’s office. While that’s a significant amount of money for most Ohioans, it’s less than half the $14.1 million raised by Republican Gov. Mike DeWine between the start of 2015 and Tuesday, the analysis showed.
