The livestream, which was hosted by Demi and Tan, took place on Friday, October 9 in order to celebrate National Coming Out Day, which falls on Sunday, October 11.
During their conversation, Demi opened up about their coming out process, citing the classic ‘90s film,, as a catalyst for figuring out their sexuality. “It was definitely when I was young and should not have been watchingwhen Tan asked how they first knew they were queer.
But while Demi might have figured things out personally, they weren't necessarily ready to share their identity with the world just yet. For a while, they explained, they turned to music as a comfortable space in which they could be their authentic self. “There were times where I wrote songs about girls that my fans thought I wrote about a guy,” Demi said. “I’m surprised that some of them didn’t figure out that some of the songs were for certain people.
The “OK Not to Be OK” singer went on to note that, like many folks, they came out in small steps — starting with a tight-knit group of trusted loved ones. “I pretty much told all of my friends and older sister when I was 17,” Demi said. “They all knew before I brought it to my parents, and then the public. Those were my three phases.”
