Dell has launched its first Windows 11 laptop based on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processors – and the price is keen.
The Dell Inspiron 14 now comes with a choice of three different processor families: the traditional AMD and Intel options, and now Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2. Opting for the ARM-based processor brings the price down to only $500, which is $50 less than the cheapest AMD model and $150 less than the cheapest Intel.
Windows on ARM does impose restrictions on what you can do with the laptop, and it’s probably best to think of the Snapdragon-based laptop as an equivalent to a Chromebook, rather than a full-blown Windows laptop. To emphasize that, Dell is shipping the laptop with Windows 11 in S Mode. This means that you’re only allowed to install apps from the Microsoft Store, unless you take the irrevocable decision to switch off S Mode.
Even if you do take the plunge and ditch S Mode, there will still be limits on the apps you can run on the laptop and third-party devices such as printers may not have software drivers for the ARM-based version.The big advantage of ARM-based processors is they’re easier on the battery than the AMD/Intel equivalents, with Qualcomm claiming the Inspiron 14 is capable of high-definition streaming for up to 16 hours on a single charge.
